I read the quote… “I Love Castro”.
I thought… “Que Come Mierda!” (That means “shit-eating fool” for our English readers).
When the Marlins acquired Ozzie Guillen I knew Miami would be in for a wild ride. So did the fish. In fact, that’s part of the reason why they wanted him. He is loud, charismatic, and brash. But today, Ozzie was none of those things. Today Ozzie was quiet, contrite, and humbled.
I was too young to really understand just how great Dan Marino was. He retired when I was nine. In fact, I actually thought he was just okay. Remember, Jimmy Johnson was taking more control of the offense. He was not allowing Dan to be the player he was and frankly, Marino was not the same player at the end. So when Marino retired, I didn’t think much of it. “We will just get another one” I thought. Little did I know what the next decade had in store for me.
Quarterback is the most important position in sports. No team could be a better example of this than the Miami Dolphins. Just look at what we have had to suffer through since Marino retired. It has literally driven me crazy. Watching my team go through mediocre quarterback after mediocre quarterback. The worst part is when we were horrible we couldn’t even get the right guys! In 2005 we went with Ronnie Brown #2 overall. In 2008 Tony Sparano went with his favorite position, Offensive Tackle, and took Jake Long (instead of QB Matt Ryan). I started thinking we would never EVER get someone to save us from the Marino Curse!
Then last season it felt like my prayers had been answered. The Dolphins started the season 0-7 and nobody had a bigger man crush on QB Andrew Luck of Stanford than me! I was on the Suck For Luck train before the season even started. I don’t advocate rooting against your own team, but I knew what the prize would be if we were just bad enough! I truly believed it was fate. It was the 13th year since #13 Marino retired and I believed the football gods would be good to me. Then the unthinkable happened, we started winning! The unlikely Matt Moore (MATT F***KING MOORE!) helped this team win 6 out of the last 9 games. And I watched as my team once again let the franchise QB that I had dreamed of slip right out of their hands. What really grinds my gears is the fact that Indianapolis gets to draft him. They don’t know pain! They have not suffered though over 10 years of band-aid quarterbacks. They go from Peyton Manning, arguably the best Quarterback ever, to a guy that scouts say is the next Peyton Manning! WHAT THE HELL?
Is my team ever going to get someone that fans can call their own for the next 10-15 years? Don’t ask me, I was ready to order my Aqua and Orange Luck jersey after week 1. Now I have to get myself mentally prepared for David Garrard, Matt “The Dream-Killer” Moore, or a Ryan Tannehill (I’m not a fan). I almost don’t even have a reason to watch this season, except for one. We couldn’t Suck For Luck but with the way our off-season is going, I think we are the early favorite to Blow For Barkley!
I hope he washed that hand….
My name is Alex Musibay. I was born and raised in Miami. Naturally, I grew up a die hard Miami sports fan. The Heat, Marlins, Dolphins, and Canes run through my blood (figuratively). Like most sports fans, I have had my ups and downs. Best Memories? 1997 & 2003 World Series Florida Marlins. 1999 & 2001 Miami Hurricanes National Championship. 2006 NBA Miami Heat Championship . And yes, “The Decision”, The Welcome Party (Hate all you want! It ranks just behind losing my virginity as the greatest day of my life!), and the Summer of 2010. Yet, you notice there’s one team missing from that list and I don’t mean the Florida Panthers (I’ll save those stories for another post). I’m talking about the Miami Dolphins. When it comes to the Dolphins, it has always been downs. 21 years old and not a single decent memory. I have never gone into a season saying “This is the year.” Unfortunately every year feels worse and worse. Its gotten to the point that I don’t even use the Dolphins as my franchise team in Madden anymore! Now I could list every sad moment the Dolphins have given me (SO MANY) but I want to save some ammo for later posts. For now I just wanted to introduce myself and tell you what to expect from me on this site. Expect my opinion on everything related to Miami Sports, how much I hate Jeff Ireland and Stephen Ross, how much I love D. Wade and LeBron James, how much I like to look at the Miami Heat Dancers, and hopefully some humor to bring it all together. I am very excited to join Winning and Misery. It is my all-time favorite Pat Riley quote and now my all-time favorite sports blog!
